MENTALIST - Earthbreaker

Hardly any other new band has been able to stir up as much dust in the power metal scene in recent years with their first three albums as the Saarbrücken and Stockholm-based formation MENTALIST!

After the huge success of their debut “Freedom Of Speech” (2020), the group, consisting of Peter Moog (guitars), Thomen Stauch (drums, ex BLIND GUARDIAN), Kai Stringer (guitars) and exceptional vocalist Rob Lundgren (vocals), only narrowly missed the German Media Control album charts with their 2021 album “A Journey Into The Unknown” (trend charts: 63rd place)! On iTunes, MENTALIST achieved an impressive #2 as the highest position in the metal charts; in the Facebook group “Power Metal” with more than 110K followers, “A Journey Into The Unknown” was voted the best power metal album of 2021.
“Empires Falling” (2023) easily topped its predecessor with a long overdue placement in the official German charts and a subsequent German tour in late fall of the same year.

The fourth album, entitled “Earthbreaker”, is a little heavier than its predecessors. Even more speed, even heavier riffs and epic moments characterize this melodic masterpiece! Both guitarists Kai Stringer and Peter Moog embellish the compositions in an enchanting way with their virtuoso guitar playing. The intensity of the hooklines and the vocals give you goose bumps. Thomen's drumming magnetizes with an animalistic impulse.
With Oliver Palotai (Kamelot) and Mike LePond (Symphony X), MENTALIST once again received active support on keyboards and bass.

Andreas Marschall (Blind Guardian, Running Wild, among others) was once again enlisted to design the artwork, while Bulgarian Dann Valentino was responsible for mixing and mastering.

Das mittlerweile vierte Album der deutsch-schwedischen Band...

Und wieder geht es in die VOLLEN-und das von Anfang des Albums.Da wird nicht lange rumgezappelt.Ohne umschweife kommt man musikalich immer sehr schnell auf den gewissen Punkt.Gut so.Und genau das musikalische Level ist schon hoch.Oder anders gesagt:Es klingt einfach gut und "erwachsen"!Ihr versteht,was ich meine...

Und für Leute,die diese Band überhaupt noch nicht kennen...Musikalisch bewegt man sich so zwischen Blind Guardian und Helloween.Ich denke,damit ist alles gesagt.Und es sagt somit auch aus,das bei dieser Band musikalische KEINE Langeweile aufkommt!

Vorallem die druckvoll eingespielten Parts des Albums machen dieses Album aus.Mal geht´s so Richtig ab...mal etwas gemäßigt...Abwechslung ist also gegeben.Wobei mir schon auffällt,das ich manche Tracks mehrmals hören musste,um die jeweilige Nummer für mich zu "verstehen"!Aber Grundsätzlich,wie bereits erwähnt,kommt in der Gesamtheit KEINE Langeweile auf.

Dass das Album so klingt wie es klingt,hängt auch sehr viel mit dem hervorragend gemischten Sound zusammen.Da wurde ein SUPER-Job gemacht.Das möchte ich an dieser Stelle auch mal erwähnen.DENN:Nicht nur die Musiker sind wichtig,sondern auch die Technik bzw. das Studio!

CAPTAIN BLACK BEARD - Chasing Danger

CAPTAIN BLACK BEARD is back with their new AOR masterpiece “Chasing Danger”! The new album features a ten-song energetic joyride of melodic rock with that special Swedish touch. This is the perfect blend of sounds like their contemporaries/friends The Night Flight Orchestra and H.E.A.T.

In late 2023 the band found themselves at a crossroad. Their lead singer Martin Holsner decided to quit the band to spend more time with his family. The Captain had been through a number of personnel changes over the years and the thought of just quitting certainly existed. However, it seemed fate would intervene. Singer Fredrik Vahlgren caught the attention of bass player/founding member Robert Majd. When hearing his voice, Robert knew that if Fredrik were to join the band, then they had to continue and they had a chance to top their earlier albums. Fredrik joined the guys who were 100% focused on making the best Captain Black Beard album to date.

2024 became the first time in the band’s 15-year history without a live show. No distractions were going to get in the way. The Captain spent most of the year perfecting what would become “Chasing Danger” in Wing Studios in Stockholm, under the careful supervision of producer Sverker Widgren with Robert Majd & guitarist Daniel Krakowski co-producing. This album also features over-the-top drumming from Vinnie Stromberg and additional awesomeness contributed by Oscar Bromwall (guitar) & John Lönnmyr (keyboard), the lead single “When It’s Over” (co-written by Wildness’ Erik Modin), a modern AOR statement in “A.I.Lover”, their trademark Disco-AOR is evident in the track “Shine”, a piano-driven ballad called “Piece Of Paradise (co-written with The Night Flight Orchestra’s John Lönnmyr) and the epic ending to the album “In Your Arms”.

“We’ve never been prouder of an album. To come back once again after a bunch of set backs and doing it this strong feels great!” says Robert Majd. Guitarist Daniel Krakowski concurs: “This is without doubt our best album”.

“Chasing Danger” will be released on LP (transparent blue vinyl, limited to 300 copies), CD and digital on April 4th, 2025 via Mighty Music.

2009 gegründeten Schwedische Melodic Rocker...Bandgründung 2009...

Irgendwie erinnert mich das ganze hier an THE NIGHT FLIGHT ORCHESTRA.Das "tanzbare" Songmaterial macht Laune...Nette Hooks,guter Gesang und eine gewisse Energie kommen gut rüber.Langeweile kommt hier definitiv nicht rüber.Das kann ich euch schon mal versichern.Wenn die Band LIVE unterwegs ist und / oder irgendwo ein Song der Band gespielt wird,wird niemand ruhig rumstehen.Das Material geht sofort in die Beine.Melancholie ist hier nicht angesagt...Sagt man das nicht auch den meißten schwedischen Bands nach...?Hm...

Besonders die oft vorkommenden Keyboardparts sollte man beachten.Denn diese gehen mir sonst immer sehr auf den Nerv,wenn davon zuviel vorkommt.So aber nicht hier.Die Abwechslung macht´s...Denn das Verhältnis zu den anderen Instrumenten ist gut ausbalanciert.KLASSE!

Für mich ist das aber trotzdem ein Album,in das ich mich reinhören bzw. reinfinden musste.Denn die Melodien,so finde ich,kommen manchmal etwas zäh rüber.Diese entfalten sich erst nach mehreren hördurchläufen.Aber das finde ich garnicht so schlimm oder verkehrt,sondern macht dieses Album eher noch interessant.Und JA!Irgendwie feiern die Herrschaften ja schon die 80er-Jahre ab mit ihrem Songmaterial.UND GENAU DAS finde ich mal RICHTIG GEIL!

Langeweile geht anders.

PROST - Believe Again

PROST is an international project led by Antoine Prost, a passionate guitarist for over 40 years. His influences are diverse, ranging from hard rock to classical music by Bach and Vivaldi. Over time, he has listened bands like MSG, UFO, Night Ranger or Whitesnake, and more recently, Revolution Saints, Degreed, and Brother Firetribe, while also drawing inspiration from the guitar virtuosos of Shrapnel Records, such as Yngwie Malmsteen, Paul Gilbert or George Bellas.

It wasn’t until 2023 that the PROST Melodic Rock band was born. The decisive encounter with Manos Fatsis, known for his collaborations with City of Lights and Odyssey Desperado, marked a major turning point. An instant chemistry was formed between the two artists: Antoine composed the music while Manos wrote the lyrics and vocal melodies. Alongside with them, Greg Aubert, a longtime friend of Antoine, joined the band on bass, and Mats Eriksson, drummer of Degreed, brought a solid and inspired rhythm section.

The result? A powerful and intense Melodic Rock album, blending sharp riffs, virtuosic solos, captivating harmonies, and immersive synth layers. With mixing and mastering handled by Mats Eriksson, the album radiates a modern and impactful energy.

Tracks like "Lone Survivor" ,"Believe Again", "Summer Days" and "Road of Tomorrow" capture the essence of the '80s with their synthetic soundscapes. 80er- und 90er-Melodic-Rock...

Als aller Erstes möchte ich zum Gesamtsound des Album kommen.Denn dieser ist mal so Richtig schön abgemischt worden.Besonders die Bassdrum wummert mal so RICHTIG rum.Und ich muss mal sagen,das ich schon lange nicht mehr einen so guten Schlagzeugsound gehört habe.KLASSE!Der Gesamtsound des Albums kommt schön ausgewogen um die Ecke.Soundmäßig ist das Scheibchen auf der Höhe der Zeit-zumindest Technisch gesehen/gehört.

Manche Songs erinnern in der Tat an Filmmusik...Man kann sich da gute Bilder vorstellen.Warum nicht...so ist ein Album nicht langweilig und man hat noch was anderen zutun,als "nur" Musik zu hören.Ihr versteht?!

Melodien...Nunja...Die Band hat ein Gefühl für Melodien-unbestritten.Und ich erwischte mich mal wieder dabei,das immer wieder Parts des Albums im verlaufe des Tages durch meinen Kopf "wanderten".

Wer jetzt aber viel Neues von der Musik dieser Band erwartet,wird enttäuscht sein.Denn vieles taucht auch bei vielen anderen Bands imner wieder auf.DAS macht aber auch nichts.Denn wer auf melodischen Rock steht,wird das hier mit GROSSER Sicherheit lieben.So auch ich!

STRATEGY - Love Tactics

NEW WAVE OF GERMAN MELODIC ROCK
Heutzutage sagen viele Leute, dass klassischer Melodic Rock und AOR eine nostalgische Sache sind, nur ein Überbleibsel aus den Achtzigern. Aber es gibt heutzutage eine Menge junger Bands, die das Gegenteil beweisen. Eine davon ist STRATEGY, ein aufstrebender Stern am Himmel des Genres, die in München von den Gitarristen Lennard „Lenny“ Hammerer und Jakob Struve gegründet wurde. Nachdem sie die richtigen Mitstreiter gefunden haben, liefert STRATEGY eingängige und kreative Songs mit einer authentischen und zeitlosen Produktion, die jedes Herz erwärmen, das für 80er Jahre Rock schlägt.

„Love Tactics“, das selbstproduzierte Debütalbum zeigt, dass diese Art von Musik frisch und zeitgemäß gespielt werden kann und weder altbacken oder zu modern klingen muss. Das Album richtet sich sowohl an die Leute, die diese Musik seit 40 Jahren lieben, als auch an jüngere Fans, die diesen Sound erst heute für sich entdecken. Die jungen Mitglieder der Band, die zur Blütezeit dieser Musik noch nicht einmal geboren waren, lieben nicht nur den AOR der 80er Jahre, sondern auch den Prog-Rock. Der beste Beweis dafür ist ihre grandiose Coverversion des YES-Klassikers „Into The Lens“ auf dem Album.

Es ist schwierig STRATEGY mit anderen Bands dieses Genres zu vergleichen, da sie ihren eigenen, einzigartigen Sound haben. Ein perfektes Beispiel dafür ist „Drowning In Heights“, die Leadsingle des Albums, denn sie zeigt alle Facetten ihrer Musik. Wenn du frisch klingenden Old School AOR suchst, dann hast du ihn gefunden, denn STRATEGY werden dir mächtig einheizen und deinen Horizont erweitern!

Ohne Frage:Das Potenzial ist vorhanden...

Das Songwriting ist ok...Der Funke will aber (noch) nicht so überspringen auf mich.ABER da geht noch viel nehr.Hoffendlich wissen die Herrschaften das auch.Denn nettes Songwriting und recht eingängige Songs garantieren noch kein Mega-Album.Musikalisch hat man noch viel Luft nach oben.Ich hab manchmal,wenn ich das Album so höre,das man sich (noch) nicht so traut,den "Löwen audzupacken"!Wie erwähnt...Das Material ist gut...Aber da fehlt mir etwas,um zu sagen:WOW!

Und ich möchte nochmal betonen:Die Herrschaften haben Potenzial.Es ist ganz bestimmt nicht schlecht,was da aus den Boxen kommt.

Ich fühl die Songs nicht wirklich.Da kommt Energie rüber...dann wieder nicht...und meißtens nicht!Schade.

Die Basics,um in der Szene RICHTIG was zu reißen,sind sicherlich gemacht mit diesem Album.Aber die Songs kommen (leider) nicht so in die Gänge.Jungs...seit beim Songwriting noch etwas mutiger.Überrascht mich!Für ein Debüt ist das ok-mehr aber auch nicht.Da kann man mehr rausholen.Auch beim Mix des Album,das für meine Ohren etwas mehr Druck in der Gesamtheit vertragen könnte!

BATTLE BEAST Frontfrau Noora Louhimo und SMACKBOUND Sängerin Netta Laurenne.Der GROSSE Wurf?

Eines vorweg:Die beiden Stimmen gefallen mir definitiv!Das harmoniert-ohne Frage! Auch das witzige Cover des Scheiblings ist gut gemacht!Und musikalisch?Nunja...Etwas Metal...etwas HardRock...Und trotzdem hab ich immer wieder Battle Beast im Ohr.Aber irgendwie klingt es dann doch ETWAS anders...ETWAS!Denn "ANLEIHEN" (was ja logisch ist) genannter Band sind trotzdem präsent.Und ich bin mal ganz ehrlich:Diese "ANLEIHEN" gefallen mir besser,als das Material von Battle Beast.Auch,wenn mich viele dafür jetzt vierteilen möchten.Ich empfinde das hier für mich einfach "runder" aus musikalischer Sicht.Das geht mir angenehmer durch meine Gehörgänge und macht mir mehr SPASS!

Auch wenn ich bei viele Songs das gefühl habe,das viel ausprobiert wurde...Das kommt gut rüber und macht dieses Album interessant.

Produziert wurde das Album erneut von Gitarrist Nino Laurenne (THUNDERSTONE,HEAVYSAURUS),der hörbar RICHTIG GUT gearbeitet hat am Mischpult.der Sound des Albums gefällt mir!

Russ Ballard expresses his excitement for the release: “It’s a buzz releasing a new album. What started as my “Lockdown-tapes” during the pandemic became an album! During lockdown, my studio was a life saver for me, and I found new ways of writing and recording. The result gives the listeners a good insight into this time - have a listen!”

Russ Ballard is simply one of the most renowned and gifted songwriters in pop and rock music.
His music career started when he was only 14 years old and he wrote a tune, which was recorded by the Shadows, appearing on their album “The Sound Of The Shadows” in 1964.

During the 70’s and 80’s, his songs ruled the airwaves and the list of hits is pretty much endless. From “Since You Been Gone” (Rainbow), “God Gave Rock'n'Roll To You” (Argent and Kiss), “So You Win Again” (Hot Chocolate), “New York Groove” (Hello and Ace Frehley), “You Can Do Magic” (America), “Winning” (Santana) or “I Don’t Believe In Miracles” (Colin Blunstone) – just to name a few – everyone who needed a great song knew that with Russ Ballard they could not go wrong.

Numerous records/artists were also produced by him, like Roger Daltrey, America, Elkie Brooks, Skindred or Sada Vidoo. In 1974, he started a solo career (after his stint with the band Argent in early 70’s), which had its highest momentum with the “S/t” album in 1984 (which included the hit single “Voices”) and the follow up “The Fire Still Burns”.

Since then, Russ released 10 studio albums and is still writing and producing hits. Three songs of his 1984 and 1985 album were featured in the TV-show “Miami Vice” and were extensively played on dancefloors around Europe.

Harem Scarem are finally back with their anticipated return album “Chasing Euphoria”, their first new album in 5 years. Their new record is an absolute belter for all Melodic Hard Rock fans and shows clearly why, when a discussion arises on who are the current heavyweights of the melodic hard rock scene, the list of names being bantered about cannot avoid a mention of Harem Scarem.

“Chasing Euphoria” brings back the band’s classic sound and shows a band at the top of their game. A cohesive unit still able to deliver a power-rock-packed punch, swaggering riffs, and hooks to die for. Harry Hess and Pete Lesperance, without a doubt, show the world that their partnership still works!

Arguably Canada’s finest melodic hard rock band, Harem Scarem were formed in 1987 by guitarist Pete Lesperance and singer Harry Hess, formerly of the heavy metal band Blind Vengeance. The lineup was rounded out by Darren Smith (drums) and Mike Gionet (bass).

They recorded a demo in 1999 and, on the strength of it, they were signed to Warner Music. Their self-titled album was a significant success in Canada and paved the way to the release of the heavier “Mood Swings” album in 1993, often considered the crown jewel of their early releases.

Enjoying a particular success in the land of the Rising Sun, Harem Scarem kept on releasing albums regularly during the 90’s, until they decided to ultimately change their name and music style to Rubber between 1999 and 2001.

In 2002, the band came back to melodic hard rock with the milestone album “Weight Of The World,” which was their first proper release in the European marketplace thanks to their newly signed deal with Frontiers. With the Italian label, Harem Scarem released another five original albums (not counting 2006’s “Human Nature”) until they took a break from recording in 2008 after the release of the album “Hope”.

In December 2012, it was announced that a reunited Harem Scarem would headline the 10th Firefest festival in Nottingham, UK, in October 2013, to perform the “Mood Swings” album in its entirety. The band regrouped and performed at Firefest and moved forward re-recording “Mood Swings II”, a twenty-year anniversary re-recording of their critically acclaimed and fan favorite second album.

The three new songs included on that release showed renewed musical vigor and chemistry. This new energy was confirmed on 2014's “Thirteen” release, which was a definitive return to the sound that put Harem Scarem on the map over 20 years earlier.

Two more acclaimed albums followed: “United” (2017) and “Change The World” (2020), where the band presented a new lineup featuring Harry Hess (lead vocals, keyboards), Pete Lesperance (guitars, keyboards), long-time drummer Creighton Doane, Mike Vassos on bass, and backing vocals from original sticksman Darren Smith.

With well over a million records sold in 43 countries and 12 top 40 hits around the globe, the new year will see Harem Scarem return and ready to dominate! Check them on tour in Europe in spring!

The band commented on the new album: “This is not just an album, but describes the attitude of the band. The album is intended to show that handmade rock music still has a firm place in society. Imagine a smoky room, the scent of freshly tapped beer in the air, and a crowd raising their glasses as classic rock chords tear through the atmosphere. This is the world of Rock-Out, a band that embraces the raw energy of rock music in its purest form.

With a no-frills attitude, loud riffs, and a passion that spills over every chord, Rock-Out brings authentic, gritty rock back to the stage - direct from Switzerland to any venue ready to be shaken to its core.

Formed in 2012, Rock-Out released their first album in 2018, “Loud, Hard and Dirty”, a debut that quickly marked them as a force to be reckoned with in the Swiss rock scene. Two years later, they dropped their second album, “Stand Together”, raw, direct, and full of Swiss rock spirit.

Their big break came in 2022, when they performed a prime-time set on Swiss national television (SRF) during a Saturday evening showcase, reaching a massive audience and cementing their status as one of the country’s most exciting live acts. For Florian Badetscher (guitar, vocals), Luca Gfeller (bass), David Bärtschi (drums), and Severin Held (guitar), there’s no safety net, no gimmicks—just pure rock energy.

Since then, Rock-Out has dominated the festival circuit, performing at major rock festivals across Switzerland and Germany, including Summerside, Riverside, and Rock of Ages. They've also conquered the club scene, selling out their first club shows and leaving audiences craving more of their powerful, melodic sound.

Rock-Out’s music is straightforward, timeless, and proudly Swiss. Hailing from the Emmental region, the band delivers powerhouse performances that speak louder than words. And at the heart of it all is frontman Florian’s incredible voice, a natural gift that adds a unique, captivating edge to their already thunderous sound.

Rock-Out are set to prove that rock is not dead, taking their high-octane, unapologetically bold music to stages everywhere. With power, confidence, and undeniable grit, Rock-Out is keeping the spirit of rock alive and louder than ever.
